About Us

Picture of Val and Pippin

We live in southeastern Ohio with our two kids, our dogs, and a variable number of chickens and fish. David Young is educated as an inorganic chemist, and Valerie Young as a chemical engineer. We are both employed at Ohio University. Our kennel name, Glenevan, recalls both our first two Welsh Springers and David's Scottish upbringing.

Glenevan isn't a business, and it isn't really a kennel. We have a couple of runs where mud can drop off in bad weather, but pretty much our dogs are house dogs. We got our first Welsh Springer, Pippin, in 1989 to be a hiking buddy. He did plenty of that. He also earned Champion and Companion Dog titles in the U.S. and Canada, and was our ticket to meeting many wonderful people in Welsh Springer Spaniels worldwide. We were initially attracted to the breed for its versatility, and continue to love it for that reason. We've earned Champion, Companion Dog, Companion Dog Excellent, Rally Novice, and Working Dog titles with our dogs, training and exhibiting them ourselves. We've dabbled in Agility and Utility. With two careers and two kids, we're the ones holding the dogs back. They'll go as far as we take them.

We've co-bred three litters with our friend Shannon Gandee (Heatherstone), and had litters of our own in 2001, 2004, and 2009. We place a high priority on temperament and health. We test for hereditary disease in our own dogs, and all of our puppy buyers agree to test their dogs when they grow up so we know as much as we can about what we are working with and what we are producing. We make the information public so other breeders can use it, too. This doesn't mean we produce perfect puppies, but we're doing our best to do right by the breed.

We hope you find the information on our website interesting and useful!
